Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee

(2009)
4 stars
Shot in five days, with no script and a budget of under {pound}50,000, this deadpan mockumentary from British director Shane Meadows (This Is England, Dead Man's Shoes) marks a return to his low-budget roots. Meadows regular Paddy Considine steals the show as Le Donk, a thick, slightly seedy but likeable Nottingham roadie whose estranged girlfriend is about to have their first child. Le Donk, though, still has dreams of rock stardom, and has recently attached himself to clown-like local white rapper Scor-Zay-Zee (Dean Palinczuk). Their strange chemistry provides the heart of what follows — a ribald, frequently hilarious and often unexpectedly moving buddy movie set in the run-up to an Arctic Monkeys concert. It's a deceptively rich, if silly, character piece that sees Meadows make a welcome return to comedy after 2002's ill-starred Once upon a Time in the MidlandsDW
