So, for those who missed it, the BBC is doing the decent thing and reshowing Jo Brand's moving exploration of the life of Vera Brittain. The First World War robbed Vera of her brother, her fiancé and a close friend. Hers could have been just another sad story from a terrible war, if Vera hadn't recorded her pain and loss so eloquently in an unforgettable memoir, Testament of Youth (some readers might remember its brilliant 1979 BBC dramatisation with Cheryl Campbell). Brand, a devotee of the book, looks at Vera's life, from her wealthy middleclass upbringing in Buxton, through her anger and sadness at the futility of war, to her days as a campaigning pacifist. It's an intimation of mortality that makes Rick (Jack Dee) take time to ponder the little things in life. Thus he smiles beatifically as he listens to bird song, much to the annoyance of his long-suffering partner Mel (the splendid Raquel Cassidy) because it's six in the morning, and embraces "good karma". It's a blandly amusing episode in a series that has never been anywhere near as cuttingly funny as it obviously thinks it is, though there are some good moments. These usually involve febrile, highly strung café owner Michael (Tony Gardner), who this week shows the results of his art-therapy sessions. We follow a case passing through the House of Lords judicial chamber, the highest court of appeal. It's a real David v Goliath number, in which a lady from Rugby takes on the might of the Environment Agency and her local cement works. Sadly, the usual tantalising rules of this series apply - we don't get to see the case itself, ie the arguments being made in court. Even so, it's a glimpse of a kind of costumed ceremonial that harks back to Elizabethan times - and which will presumably be swept away when we get the new Supreme Court planned by Jack Straw. Meanwhile, we meet the chairman of the Bar Council and his well-upholstered colleague who insists, endearingly, that barristers are "scrawny moggies, not fat cats". Based on the comic-strip character created by David Low, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's film does indeed take a pop at the complacency of the top brass, yet, thanks to Roger Livesey's astonishing performance in the lead, it is also a tribute to the more laudable peculiarities of the British character - honour, loyalty and a genius for making the most of a bad lot. Anton Walbrook also excels as Livesey's Prussian nemesis who becomes a lifelong friend, while a young Deborah Kerr makes her mark playing the three women in Livesey's life. Boris talks us through the "treachery, sadism and religious mania" of the Crusades, and brings his tale alive with tragicomic detail. "They were not exactly steady on parade," he observes of the mob-like First Crusade, but a "ragtag and bobtail collection of peasants, paupers and fanatics" who were "pretty badly duffed up for their pains." Via bashibazouks, discursions on the grooming habits of crusader wives and his theory on why the Spanish love ham so much, Boris spells out the "clash of civilisations" with wit, authority and a shrewd eye for Western hypocrisies. He points out that, although history may have favoured the West over the past few centuries, it was the riches of the New World that helped tip the balance. As Jewish moneylender Shylock, Pacino gives a subtle performance, generally curbing his recent tendency to chew the scenery. But he's obviously having to work hard just to keep up with Jeremy Irons's quietly noble merchant Antonio, whose flesh Shylock demands as recompense for an outstanding loan, and Lynn Collins's hugely impressive Portia. Michael Radford's direction is straightforward and unflashy, while the film benefits from shooting scenes on location in Venice itself. Four hundred years may have dated the play, which reflects the racism of Shakespeare's time rather than ours, but this is still a stylish take on a still-resonant masterpiece.~false~06/12/2008~23:20~01:25~125 The Million Dollar Hotel~~~1999~Wim Wenders~Tom Tom*Jeremy Davies|Eloise*Milla Jovovich|Skinner*Mel Gibson|Geronimo*Jimmy Smits|Dixie*Peter Stormare|Vivien*Amanda Plummer|Jessica*Gloria Stuart|Hector*Tom Bower|Shorty*Bud Cort|Charley Best*Donal Logue|Stanley Goldkiss*Harris Yulin|Terence Scopey*Julian Sands|Izzy Goldkiss*Tim Roth|Man in hotel lobby*Bono~false~true~false~true~true~false~false~false~1~15~Film~Director Wim Wenders applies his art house touch to this Hollywood tale of an FBI agent investigating a suspicious death at a bizarre, bohemian hotel. OK, so she's meant to be an innocent, but her teary and naive compulsions are still unconvincing and irritating. The prologue detailing Joan's childhood is dire, but the film does pick up after the entrance of John Malkovich as Charles VII, and there are some remarkable battle scenes before Joan's downfall and death. In late 1944, as the Second World War moved gradually to a close, the country whose invasion had prompted Britain to enter the war was being squeezed on both sides. The Nazis were holding firm in the west, while the Red Army were advancing from the east. But judging by this documentary's lurid accounts of rape, murder, mass looting and imprisonment, it seems they were not so much liberators as conquerors. Meanwhile, the Allies were secretly negotiating the fate of Eastern Europe: Churchill offering a crude division of power to Joseph Stalin - even moving Poland's borders 100 miles to the west to accommodate the Russian leader's demands. And all the while Polish soldiers were fighting for a homeland that no longer existed. This is the penultimate edition of Laurence Rees's superb series, so we should be used to Stalin's tyrannical behaviour and deceptions. Yet it still shocks. This delightfully bucolic documentary takes us to the Montado in the Alentejo region of Portugal, where much of the world's supply of cork grows. Here the ancient cork oaks are stripped of their bark every nine years (it does them no harm) to be turned into fishing fl oats, floor tiles and, of course, wine stoppers. But the cork forests do more than just prevent us spilling our merlot; they are the cornerstone of a flourishing eco-system that sustains wild flowers, rare butterflies, bats, pigs, deer, vultures, seemingly every species of bird known to man, and the almost extinct Iberian lynx. So, if we continue to bung up our wine bottles with plastic or metal caps, not only will farming families lose their livelihood but the world could lose some extraordinary wildlife, too. Now they're on an exponential rise around the world. Why? A top-notch Horizon runs through different suspects. Genetics? Air pollution? Too much washing? Changes in diet? Or perhaps, the psychologists venture to suggest, it's all in our minds? It's like a planet-wide medical whodunnit with, you strongly suspect, a Murder on the Orient Express-type denouement: they all dunnit. Director Naomi Austin takes her cameras from the South Atlantic to Barbados to California to Essex to chart the cases of families caught up in what it seems fair to call "the global allergy crisis". But we get plenty of meaty science, too. It's pacey, thorough and leaves you with food for thought - as well as the heartening tale of eight-year-old Danny from Gwent and his life-threatening dog allergy. Later, in The Story of Asthma Island (10pm BBC4) there's an in-depth look at the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha, where asthma affects every single family.
