Huw Edwards turns up his Welshness and valiantly tries to ramp up the tension as he takes us through events leading up to the day. The documentary includes an entertaining interview with ceremony organiser Lord Snowdon, who brought a touch of theatricality to the proceedings. "I looked like a 1950s cinema usherette, although the press described my outfit as Buttons," he chortles, "It was all as bogus as hell."

It means they needed to find a replacement and most of this episode is given over to their search. After advertising and whittling the replies down to 40, they put the candidates through a rigorous selection process. For Ed Coats, the young, lantern-jawed doctor they choose to join them, there's a great deal of training and bonding to do in the months ahead. For Ben, it's more about recuperation as he comes down with what we now know was a potentially lethal disease caused by a South American flesh-eating bug. But it's not the illness that makes him break down in tears.

In all those movies, Lumet depended on a charismatic central performance, and it's no different here, with Nick Nolte playing a hulking, dedicated if brutal cop suspected of killing a drug pusher. Seeking the truth behind the murder is a squeaky-clean assistant district attorney, played by Timothy Hutton. Of course, everything fell apart within days when it emerged that a Corpus Christi team member wasn't a student at the time of filming. Thus the rules were broken, the college was stripped of its title (which went to the runners-up), and the august quiz show was mired in scandal. This was a pity, as the whole farrago marred what had been a gripping series, so here's hoping all will go smoothly this time around and we can get back to normal. Jeremy "Come on! Come on!" Paxman is, as usual, asking the questions and the teams in the opening round are from Christ's College, Cambridge and Warwick University.

What To Eat Now~~1/6~~~~false~false~false~true~true~false~false~false~~~Cookery~The genial and endearing Valentine Warner is posh, so when it comes to barbecuing, you can be sure that he's not a man who'd be content with cremated burgers on charcoal briquettes. No, the Bertie Wooster of TV chefs is more a lightly scorched courgettes and chanterelle mushrooms man. Or how about lamb's liver? Or pineapple? Or lobster? In a bizarre sequence, Warner visits a "lobster whisperer", who teaches him how to hypnotise the creature so it's in a Zen-like trance when Warner goes in for the kill. But the best-looking dish is the fabulous beef from cattle grazing on common land around Cambridge that Warner rustles up for a local rowing team. Yum.

The Supersizers Eat... The French Revolution~~4/6~~Hugo Macgregor~~false~false~false~true~true~false~false~false~~~Documentary~The format is starting to wear thin as we reach the French Revolution, with Sue Perkins and Giles Coren donning powdered wigs to stuff their faces as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Certainly seeing Coren shovel endless greasy handfuls of meat into his mouth has a limited appeal, as does watching the two stars doing little more than larking about in silly costumes. There are interesting bits, though, like learning that Marie Antoinette was a domestic plumbing pioneer who loved taking regular baths filled with what amounted to muesli (nuts, seeds and whatnot). And the lavish contemporary menus are fascinating; it's easy to see why the peasants revolted - eggs in orange flower water, anyone?

In May 2008, after several months of training with Ben Fogle and James Cracknell, the actor had to bow out of their bid to race to the South Pole because of work commitments. It means they needed to find a replacement and most of this episode is given over to their search. After advertising and whittling the replies down to 40, they put the candidates through a rigorous selection process. For Ed Coats, the young, lantern-jawed doctor they choose to join them, there's a great deal of training and bonding to do in the months ahead. For Ben, it's more about recuperation as he comes down with what we now know was a potentially lethal disease caused by a South American flesh-eating bug. But it's not the illness that makes him break down in tears.

So begins BBC correspondent Harry Chambers' piece to camera from a central African republic at the start of this spoof on foreign news reporting. "It wouldn't take much to make a difference here," he adds, "A visit by Angelina Jolie or Fearne Cotton...perhaps even a simple, one-off drama by Richard Curtis." It's one of the better jokes in what turns out to be a rambling farce set under African skies - imagine Drop the Dead Donkey crossed with Evelyn Waugh's Scoop. Martin Jarvis is enjoyable as a John Simpson-style foreign editor who flies in to take over any story when it gets big enough, treading on the toes of local stringers like Harry. But Jarvis and the rest of the cast have to fight with a script that wobbles alarmingly. A running joke about a plump female reporter's troubled bowels is about as unfunny as comedy gets. There's a great satire to be made deconstructing the foibles of the news machine. Sadly, this isn't it.

If you're hoping she might point us towards a deposit account paying 15 per cent AER, think again: the advice here is along the lines of "spread your risks". Merryn talks to savers who take different approaches. My favourite is the retired fireman who sinks a third of his savings into a vintage Ferrari, by far the most photogenic investment here, but the programme is at pains to point out that "exotic" investments are something of a gamble. Meanwhile, a man in big red braces whose office overlooks the Gherkin talks about how "Investment is not about punting on stocks and shares. That's the financial version of...", and at this point he tries to say "the 2.30 at Newmarket" but it sounds more like "the thoo-nirty at Twomarket". But I think we get the point.

But hang on, this looks different, too. Instead of the usual gothic style, we have a simple, stagey approach: one room, a single shot with no (visible) edits. Yes, what we have here is Psychoville's very own tribute to Alfred Hitchcock's Rope. It's an ambitious idea and it's slickly done, with the expected touches of the surreal. As they try to get over the unpleasantness of the murder, the pair put "the cheering-up tape" on - an upbeat aerobics workout to which they do a hopeless dance routine. But no sooner have they put the kettle on than there's a knock at the door and they're disturbed by a stranger in a belted mac and trilby, asking uncomfortable questions. He's played by a familiar face (especially to fans of Shearsmith and Pemberton's work), but the show begs us not to reveal his identity, for some reason, so anagram fans, take note: he's billed as "Sam Kisgart".

Yet there's much to be thankful for, especially the presence of Monroe, lovingly lit in Technicolor by the great Jack Cardiff. As you would expect, Monroe sparkles, showing a terrific sense of comic timing in a performance of great skill and beauty certainly helped by that figure-hugging white evening dress she wears throughout. Olivier, who also directed, seems overawed, and hampers himself with a Balkan accent that's a cross between Garbo and Bela Lugosi.
