It's a blandly amusing episode in a series that has never been anywhere near as cuttingly funny as it obviously thinks it is, though there are some good moments. These usually involve febrile, highly strung café owner Michael (Tony Gardner), who this week shows the results of his art-therapy sessions.

It's a real David v Goliath number, in which a lady from Rugby takes on the might of the Environment Agency and her local cement works. Sadly, the usual tantalising rules of this series apply - we don't get to see the case itself, ie the arguments being made in court. Even so, it's a glimpse of a kind of costumed ceremonial that harks back to Elizabethan times - and which will presumably be swept away when we get the new Supreme Court planned by Jack Straw. Meanwhile, we meet the chairman of the Bar Council and his well-upholstered colleague who insists, endearingly, that barristers are "scrawny moggies, not fat cats".

Via bashibazouks, discursions on the grooming habits of crusader wives and his theory on why the Spanish love ham so much, Boris spells out the "clash of civilisations" with wit, authority and a shrewd eye for Western hypocrisies. He points out that, although history may have favoured the West over the past few centuries, it was the riches of the New World that helped tip the balance.

But he's obviously having to work hard just to keep up with Jeremy Irons's quietly noble merchant Antonio, whose flesh Shylock demands as recompense for an outstanding loan, and Lynn Collins's hugely impressive Portia. Michael Radford's direction is straightforward and unflashy, while the film benefits from shooting scenes on location in Venice itself. Louis Theroux shows us a vision of hell as helpless people take the law into their own hands, with devastating consequences. Private security firms are flourishing in parts of the city where the police have lost control. Theroux - he might look like a geek, but he's got a heck of a sturdy backbone - goes on patrol with members of these firms of armed men who apprehend alleged criminals then dole out their own form of thuggish summary justice. In a tense atmosphere, Theroux visits one of Johannesburg's many so-called "hijacked" buildings - apartment blocks taken over by criminal gangs who then force tenants to pay them rent. It's a reeking and squalid place, populated by helpless people who have nothing.

OK, so she's meant to be an innocent, but her teary and naive compulsions are still unconvincing and irritating. The prologue detailing Joan's childhood is dire, but the film does pick up after the entrance of John Malkovich as Charles VII, and there are some remarkable battle scenes before Joan's downfall and death. Besson is a truly imaginative film-maker, and had the film been cut to a standard two hours it might have been a great historical masterpiece. Meanwhile, the Allies were secretly negotiating the fate of Eastern Europe: Churchill offering a crude division of power to Joseph Stalin - even moving Poland's borders 100 miles to the west to accommodate the Russian leader's demands. And all the while Polish soldiers were fighting for a homeland that no longer existed. This is the penultimate edition of Laurence Rees's superb series, so we should be used to Stalin's tyrannical behaviour and deceptions. Yet it still shocks.
