It's not just Angelica's (Andrea Riseborough, below) life in the balance. King Charles is condemned as a traitor and it's hard not to be moved by Peter Capaldi's compassionate portrayal of a man facing the inevitable; his execution scene is almost unbearable to watch. In many ways the story hits its stride in this episode, as the English Civil War tightens its bloody grip on a nation in uproar, with Cromwell (Dominic West) finally showing his true colours as a murderous brute, to the horror of his decent, honourable and disillusioned lieutenant, Sexby (John Simm).

In fact, the line is spoken by a tipsy Susan, who's rekindled her relationship with Jackson (a liaison that for viewers is just about as stimulating as a five-year-old's homework).

While colleagues quickly point the finger at Judd, much to the consternation of her mentor and commissioner, Samuel L Jackson, Kaufman is more indiscriminate with his accusations. Throwaway dialogue, constant close-ups and stalker-style tracking shots set up almost every character as a suspect without any concrete reason. There are so many red herrings and so little real action that it all becomes tiresome, especially when Judd's contribution is a repeated cycle of drinking, passing out and waking up to discover another corpse. Though hers is a role normally filled by a man, like the rest of the core cast she's suffocated by the overall weakness of the plot and script. It's the flamboyant yet poignant story of cross-dressing teen Patrick "Kitten" Braden (Cillian Murphy), whose determination to find his real mother leads to an outrageous series of misadventures. While crackling with political tension and sinister unease, events are largely played for laughs - albeit of the darkest variety. Aside from Murphy's delightfully exaggerated performance, there are a host of vibrant characters, including Stephen Rea's sensitive magician and Liam Neeson's emotionally tortured priest. The Gary Numan-ish music by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy (who also did the Father Ted theme) goes perfectly with low-res animations of the characters smashing computers with cricket bats. Second, it has a wonderful performance by Richard Ayoade as hopeless, geeky treasure Moss. It's a mystery why Moss doesn't get more screen time; instead his daffy colleagues Roy and Jen get the big storylines while he tags along. Tonight, company boss Douglas, another treat, comes back into the picture. He settles a sexual harassment charge with Jen that means he has to wear special electric pants. If that sounds rampantly silly, it is, and so is the rest of the plot, but you don't tune in to this sitcom for sober realism: relax and enjoy.

Insisting Tom is his old Mob buddy "Joey" from Philadelphia, he manages to cast doubt even in Edie's mind, creating a central "is-he-or-isn't-he" mystery that's deliciously teased out. Once that question is solved, the film sags slightly, but it perks up again in the final act thanks to a ripe, comic turn from William Hurt. The hopelessness of the children's situation makes for harrowing viewing, especially once sickness and delirium sets in. First up are Mary-Anne and Alastair Robb, an elderly couple with an admirable passion for their exquisite 15th-century manor house in Somerset. They've slaved for years over its restoration but it eats money. Even worse, none of their children are keen to take it over when they've gone. Ruth curbs her bossier tendencies and gently suggests all sorts of simple ways to make Cothay Manor more commercial and improve the situation. But the terribly posh and wonderfully eccentric Mary-Anne is like a giant oak tree - immoveable.

Only the enigmatic Sexby (John Simm) remains a constant in Angelica's life; he's loyal and brave and his increasing disillusion with Cromwell leads him to irrevocable action.

But the fire's the big story. It's linked to creepy Dave, whose past has caught up with him. "He's in your band!" gasps the doctor. Eugene Lourie's sets are also overly intrusive.
