Jade Johnson's revealing cobweb dress caused a stir among viewers as did the appearance of Laila Rouass and Zoe Lucker wearing what looked like a bit of fringing. Whether the skimpy outfits were the result of budget cuts in the wardrobe department or simply to "sex up" the show isn't clear. In any case tonight Strictly is returning to its elegant roots. Or at least to the ornate Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, which is where the original show Come Dancing used to be held. It's not, of course, the first time the show has been back there: in 2004 the final (when Jill Halfpenny and Darren Bennett were crowned champions) was held here, too. Hotfooting their way to the north will be the nine remaining celebrity contestants and their partners, as well as hosts Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly, and the panel of judges. Sometimes Garrow's Law feels like a not-terribly-funny episode of Blackadder the Third because it's so archly talky and wig-tastic. Other times it feels like a fair stab at trying something new with the courtroom-drama genre. Andrew Buchan is impressive as pioneering, late-18th-century barrister William Garrow, as is the ever-dependable Alun Armstrong as his mentor Southouse. But the central story isn't gripping: London is in a moral panic after a creepy stranger carries out bizarre random knife attacks on ladies of quality that leave them with superficial cuts in some delicate places. Fanned by overheated media coverage in excitable newspapers, the capital is soon transfixed by the beast in their midst. Women are living in fear, while their menfolk take a prurient interest in the modus operandi of "the Monster", as the stalker becomes known. The courtroom scenes are well done and instructive - they are bear pits, spectacles packed to the rafters with rowdy spectators - but overall Garrow's Law doesn't pack enough of an emotional punch. Knowing the difficulties that rearing a child with a disability can bring, she meets and gently probes other families struggling to raise a disabled child. The emphasis here is deliberately - and courageously - on the hardships that come with caring for disabled children rather than the joys. Talking to carers who are desperate and crumbling (rather than the super-mums and dads more often showcased in this sort of documentary) makes for a deeply emotional, unsettling piece of television. But it also feels profoundly honest. All the parents - including Monckton - and able-bodied siblings talk freely about their lowest points. Some even admit to thinking about harming their children. You would choose a greasy-spoon café or a grotty alleyway, somewhere inconspicuous where you were unlikely to be spotted by your enemies. You wouldn't choose a huge deserted bandstand in a public park, or the steps of the Albert Memorial in London, would you? That would be like carrying a large placard with the words "Hello! We are spies!" daubed on it in orange paint. Yet Spooks' personnel insist upon having their supposedly secret get-togethers in such public places. But they aren't your usual spies; Spooks agents dress in black leather and walk in slow motion and they never, ever smile. Not that there's much to laugh about. Britain's energy supply is in crisis and power cuts are looming after a huge fire at the country's biggest gas processing plant. The government wants to cut a deal with a grubby little Russian satellite country with a very bad human rights record. It's up to the Spooks to ensure everything goes smoothly. The story is told with Spooks' trademark brio and yes, it's probably all quite preposterous. But by heck, it's good fun. It seemed the normal thing to do for a boy who spent his life trying to win his alcoholic dad's love and attention. Says Calum Best, in this affecting Children in Need special, "I didn't know anything different. Our relationship was me, him and alcohol." Calum Best is a tabloid staple, well known for his volcanic private life and for being unable to spell "celebrity" when he took part in ITV1's cretinous reality show, Celebrity Love Island. But it's hard to judge him for his very public shortcomings as he talks about his childhood and the father who would disappear on benders, leaving his small son alone and forgotten. Best talks to the children of alcoholic parents and their stories are almost unbearably moving as they discuss chaotic lives filled with broken promises, the desperate need for love, the mental cruelty and, sometimes, the violence from drunk mothers and fathers. Clooney also appears as CBS newsroom producer Fred Friendly, but wisely retreats to the background for the most part in favour of David Strathairn. As languid anchorman Edward R Murrow (whose signature sign-off gives the film its title), Strathairn gives a magnificent performance of quiet, steadfast courage, taking on not only McCarthy but his concerned station boss William Paley (an excellent Frank Langella) over whether or not to air the provocative reports. Clooney uses - and occasionally overuses - archive footage of the hearings to bring the true bullying monstrousness of the junior senator from Wisconsin to life, while keeping the simmering drama tightly confined within the studios and offices of CBS. Gorgeously shot in black and white by cinematographer Robert Elswit through a fug of cigarette smoke, this Oscar-nominated movie not only establishes Clooney's credentials as a director, but also indirectly has much to say about the present state of the US media post 9/11. ~false~11/11/2009~23:50~01:15~85 Weatherview~~~~~~false~false~false~true~true~false~false~false~~~News and Current Affairs~Detailed weather forecast.~false~12/11/2009~01:15~01:20~5 Sign Zone:Gandhi~~The Road to Freedom~~Emily Davis~~false~false~true~true~true~false~true~false~~~Documentary~In the final episode, Mishal Husain explores the dramatic last years of Gandhi's life, which culminated in his death by an assassin's bullet. As a child, Matt Murdock is blinded by radioactive waste that simultaneously heightens his other senses. He grows up to be a New York lawyer (played by Ben Affleck) who doubles as a nocturnal, leather-clad crime-fighter. As the first instalment of a potential franchise, the film goes through the motions of setting up the story and characters, with the flashbacks to Matt's boyhood the strongest episode. Thereafter the narrative gets flabby - introducing a soppy love story involving Jennifer Garner of TV's Alias and a cursory game of cat-and-mouse against Colin Farrell's poorly sketched villain - and the action is sapped of clarity and subtlety by rushed editing and the relentless heavy metal soundtrack. ~false~13/11/2009~23:45~01:20~95 Weatherview~~~~~~false~false~false~true~true~false~false~false~~~News and Current Affairs~Detailed weather forecast.~false~14/11/2009~01:20~01:25~5 Sign Zone:Around the World in 80 Days~~~~Matt Brandon~Frank Skinner~false~false~true~true~true~false~true~false~~~Documentary~Six pairs of celebrities race against the clock to raise money for 2009's BBC Children in Need. Her talents are belatedly recognised by sleazy agent Michael Caine, who's prepared to endure the attentions of her sexually predatory mother (Brenda Blethyn) as long as he can make some money out of that voice. The brilliance of Horrocks is slightly undermined by director Mark Herman's crude depiction of working-class life in a northern seaside town, while Blethyn's strident squawking almost threatens to drown out the more subtle, Cinderella-like undertones of the story. But there's good support from Jim Broadbent as a nightclub boss and from Ewan McGregor.
